However, those born before this date can still submit other documents as per the old rules.

Birth Certificate is Now Mandatory for New Applicants

The government has updated the passport rules, stating that for applicants born on or after October 1, 2023, only a birth certificate will be accepted as proof of date of birth. This certificate must be issued by authorized government bodies, such as:

1) Registrar of Births and Deaths

Without this certificate, the applicant’s date of birth will not be considered valid, which could lead to problems in the passport application process.

Other Documents Are Still Accepted for Older Applicants

For those born before October 1, 2023, other documents can still be used to verify the date of birth. These include:

Driving License

School Leaving Certificate

PAN Card

Voter ID Card

Other government-issued documents containing the date of birth

These documents will continue to be valid for passport applications under the old rules.

Official Notification and Impact of the Change

The government has issued an official notification regarding these changes, and the new rules will come into effect once published in the official gazette.

This update means that individuals born after October 1, 2023, must ensure they obtain a birth certificate, as other documents will no longer be accepted.

However, those born before this date can still use other forms of identification to prove their date of birth.
