With the rise of digital payments through UPI, cases of fraud are also increasing. To address this issue, new measures are being introduced to enhance security.
A key change is the development of a system that will use biometrics, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, to authenticate UPI transactions instead of the traditional PIN.
NPCI’s Plans for Enhanced Security
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the UPI payment system, is working on this major update to make UPI payments more secure.
They are exploring the use of biometric features like fingerprint and face recognition to authenticate payments.
NPCI is collaborating with various startup companies to integrate these biometric facilities into UPI.
Integration with Smartphone Features
Many modern smartphones already include biometric features like fingerprint sensors and face recognition.
For example, Android users will be able to make payments using their fingerprint sensors, while iPhone users will use Face ID for UPI transactions.
This integration aims to leverage the security features built into smartphones to make UPI payments easier and more secure.
Current PIN Requirement and Future Changes
Currently, UPI payments require a 4 or 6 digit PIN for authentication. This PIN is used for transactions on all UPI apps, including Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
With the upcoming changes, users will be able to use fingerprint or facial recognition in place of the PIN, making UPI payments more convenient and secure.
