If you’re planning to visit Nepal for work, business, or a vacation, there’s some good news.
The Nepal government has relaxed its rules on carrying Indian currency, making travel between India and Nepal much more convenient.
Under the new rules, both Indian and Nepalese citizens can carry Indian cash up to a fixed limit without facing unnecessary hassles.
However, the rule applies only to specific currency notes, so it’s important to know what is allowed before you travel.
You Can Now Carry Up to ₹25,000 in Indian Currency
The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has announced that Indian and Nepalese citizens can now carry up to ₹25,000 in Indian currency while traveling between the two countries.
This means travelers can take Indian cash into Nepal and also bring it back to India, as long as the total amount does not exceed ₹25,000.
The new rule was introduced through an official notification issued by the Nepal Rastra Bank on Thursday. The move is expected to make travel and business transactions between the two neighboring countries much smoother.
These Indian Notes Are Still Not Allowed
Although the rules have been relaxed, some Indian currency notes are still banned in Nepal.
The old ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes issued before the 2016 demonetization remain prohibited. Carrying these old notes into Nepal or bringing them back is still not allowed.
Important Rules Travelers Should Know
There are a few conditions attached to the new policy.
Nepalese citizens can bring Indian currency into Nepal only if they are traveling from India. They cannot carry Indian cash into Nepal from any other country.
Similarly, Indian currency cannot be taken from Nepal to any country other than India.
According to the government, these rules are meant for people traveling or doing business between India and Nepal.
Foreign Currency Rules Remain the Same
The rules for carrying foreign currency have not changed.
Nepalese citizens and foreign travelers can bring up to US$5,000 (or an equivalent amount in another foreign currency) into Nepal without declaring it at customs.
If you are carrying more than US$5,000, you must declare the amount to customs officials when you arrive in Nepal.
