The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has clarified recent misconceptions about booking e-tickets.
Contrary to circulating reports, IRCTC account holders can indeed book tickets for others with different surnames.
Clarification on E-Ticket Booking Rules
A spokesperson for the railway ministry clarified on Tuesday that IRCTC account holders can book e-tickets for others, regardless of different surnames.
Reports on social media claiming otherwise are false and misleading.
The spokesperson emphasized that tickets are booked on the IRCTC website in accordance with Railway Board guidelines,
which are publicly available.
Booking Limits and Regulations
According to the Indian Railways, individuals can use their personal User ID to book tickets for friends, family, and relatives.
Up to 12 tickets per month can be booked from a single account.
If the account holder is Aadhar-authenticated, they can book up to 24 tickets per month,
as long as at least one traveler on each ticket is also Aadhar-authenticated.
The spokesperson also warned that tickets booked through personal user IDs are not meant for commercial sale,
and doing so is an offense under section 143 of the Railways Act, 1989.
