New Delhi:
Railway accidents are frequently reported. Unfortunately, such incidents are common. Often, these accidents leave many passengers injured or disabled, and some even lose their lives.
For instance, on May 19, an iron pole fell on the Shalimar Express while it was passing through Urkura railway station near Raipur in Chhattisgarh, injuring three passengers.
The injured passengers have been taken to the hospital.
Get insurance for just 45 paise
Railway passengers often discuss insurance in such situations. This service is offered by Indian Railways to compensate passengers in case of injury or death.
However, the benefits of railway travel insurance are accessible solely to passengers who purchase insurance with their ticket.
This insurance entails a premium of just 45 paise and offers coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh.
Unfortunately, many passengers remain unaware of this plan.
Who gets the insurance facility?
Railway travel insurance is specifically offered to passengers who book their railway tickets online. Passengers who purchase tickets from the counter or travel in general coaches do not receive the benefits of this insurance.
Importantly, this insurance is optional, and passengers have the choice to opt-in or not.
Passengers who book tickets online get benefits
If you’ve booked a railway ticket online, the insurance company compensates for any losses suffered by the passenger in the event of an accident.
In the unfortunate event of a passenger’s death or complete loss of any body part due to a railway accident, Rs 10 lakh is provided.
For permanent partial disability, the passenger receives Rs 7.5 lakh.
Additionally, in case of injury, Rs 2 lakh is available for medical expenses.
How can railway passengers avail insurance benefits?
Passengers can opt for travel insurance by selecting the optional insurance choice when booking tickets online, regardless of their travel class.
The charge for this insurance is a mere 45 paise.
After selecting the insurance option, a link is sent to the passenger’s email and mobile number to provide nominee details.
Having a nominee listed on the insurance policy simplifies the process of claiming insurance.
