In March this year, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was admitted to AIIMS Delhi for four days due to heart-related issues. But his sudden resignation is not something ordinary or routine.
What appears on the surface may not reflect the full story—there’s likely something much deeper happening behind the scenes. Just before his resignation, an important closed-door meeting was held in Parliament.
What Really Happened with Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation?
On Monday, the political atmosphere in Delhi turned tense when Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar unexpectedly resigned. He made the announcement on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.
While he said his health was the reason behind stepping down, there’s more to the story. His previous hospital stay at AIIMS Delhi in March due to heart problems adds some context, but many believe there’s more happening behind the curtains.
A Key Meeting Before the Resignation
As reported by News18, a significant meeting took place in Parliament before Dhankhar’s resignation. The Prime Minister and several senior ministers attended it. It’s believed that the matter of his resignation was discussed during this meeting.
During this period, Dhankhar was also present in the Rajya Sabha chair. While there, he announced receiving a notice signed by over 50 Members of Parliament, seeking the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Verma.
He then instructed the Secretary-General to move forward with the process. What Prompted the Vice President’s Resignation?
Sources say that Dhankhar arrived at Rashtrapati Bhavan on very short notice and submitted his resignation to the President without scheduling any prior appointment.
Another major point of interest is his growing interaction with opposition leaders, especially from the Congress party.
His meetings with these leaders have become a topic of political conversation. He reportedly met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at VP Enclave last week and had a discussion with Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal just a day before resigning.
Dhankhar was also vocal about bringing back a system like the NJAC (National Judicial Appointments Commission) to fight corruption in the judiciary—an idea that didn’t align well with the current government’s position.
Clashes with the Opposition and Talk of Impeachment
It’s no secret that Dhankhar had frequent and intense disagreements with opposition members during parliamentary sessions.
In fact, the opposition had once submitted a motion to impeach him, marking the first time such a proposal was made against a sitting Vice President in independent India.
However, this motion was later dismissed by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh.
Jagdeep Dhankhar has now become the third Vice President in India’s history to resign before completing his term.
The first two were V. V. Giri and R. Venkataraman, who left the post to contest the presidential elections.
