India has taken a big step towards clean and eco-friendly transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered passenger train.
Flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the train marks a major milestone in Indian Railways’ efforts to adopt greener technology.
Built in India using hydrogen fuel cell technology, the train produces zero carbon emissions, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel-powered trains.
With affordable ticket prices, passengers can now experience this new technology without paying extra.
Ticket Price Starts from Just ₹5
One of the biggest attractions of India’s first hydrogen train is its low ticket fare.
Passengers are expected to pay between ₹5 and ₹25, making the journey affordable for everyone.
Despite using advanced hydrogen technology, the train’s fare remains similar to that of regular passenger trains.
This means travelers can experience India’s latest railway innovation without any premium pricing.
Route and Key Features
The hydrogen-powered train is running on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana under the Northern Railway zone.
The route covers nearly 90 kilometres and has been introduced as a pilot project to test the use of hydrogen fuel technology in Indian Railways.
Special hydrogen refuelling infrastructure has also been developed to support the train’s operations.
The train has 10 coaches and can carry around 2,600 passengers.
It operates at a commercial speed of around 75 kmph, making it suitable for regular passenger services.
Why Is This Train Special?
Unlike diesel engines, hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen.
The only by-product of this process is water vapour, making the train a zero-emission mode of transport that helps reduce air pollution.
Hydrogen-powered trains are also quieter than diesel trains and generally require less maintenance, making them an efficient option for the future.
The train is also being recognised as one of the world’s longest hydrogen-powered passenger trains, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in green transportation.
A Major Step Towards Sustainable Rail Travel
The launch of the hydrogen train is part of Indian Railways’ long-term plan to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and promote clean energy.
Hydrogen-powered trains can be especially useful on railway routes where complete electrification is difficult or expensive.
If the pilot project is successful, Indian Railways may introduce more hydrogen-powered trains on other routes across the country, helping India move closer to a cleaner and more sustainable transport system.
