India Post Speed Post rule has changed, with mobile numbers of both the sender and recipient required when booking Speed Post and Registered Post items.
The change means providing only the postal address will no longer be enough for these bookings.
Under the new requirement, customers sending letters, documents or parcels through Speed Post or Registered Post must provide the sender’s mobile number as well as the recipient’s number at the time of booking.

The new requirement comes against the backdrop of delivery difficulties caused by incomplete or incorrect addresses.
When a mobile number is unavailable, postal staff may have limited options to contact the concerned person if clarification is needed during delivery.
The reported purpose of recording mobile numbers is therefore to improve communication and make tracking and delivery-related contact easier.
A Department of Posts instruction issued in May 2026 had also made mobile-number capture mandatory for accountable mail, while specifying certain exceptions for particular categories of international mail, government offices and other cases.
