India Post has announced important changes to its Speed Post services starting August 1. For the first time, the Department of Posts has officially defined what counts as a “document” and what will be treated as a “parcel.”

The new rules also introduce updated Speed Post charges for retail and wholesale customers. India Post’s 24-hour Speed Post aims to deliver items within 24 hours, while the 48-hour service targets delivery within 48 hours.

What Will Be Treated as a Document?

Under the new rules, several commonly mailed items will now be classified as documents instead of parcels.

This includes banking and financial items such as welcome kits, letters, passbooks, cheque books, bank documents, debit cards, and credit cards.

Government-issued documents like PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards, passports, and driving licences are also part of this category.

In addition, non-commercial packets weighing up to 500 grams, such as Rakhi envelopes, Rakhi packets, and greeting cards, will also be treated as documents.

Any item that does not fall under these categories will be sent as a parcel.

New Speed Post Charges for Retail Customers

India Post has not changed the existing retail rates, but it has introduced new charges for bulk bookings in the document category.

From August 1, the 24-hour Speed Post service for retail customers will cost between ₹38 and ₹186 per packet, depending on the item’s weight and the delivery distance.

For packets weighing up to 50 grams, the local postage charge will be ₹38, while nationwide delivery will cost ₹94 (GST extra).

For packets weighing between 51 and 250 grams, charges will range from ₹118 to ₹154. For packets weighing between 251 and 500 grams, the fee will be between ₹140 and ₹186.

New Rates for Wholesale Customers

India Post has also announced new pricing for wholesale customers.

The 24-hour Speed Post service will cost between ₹38 and ₹100, while the 48-hour Speed Post service will range from ₹48 to ₹72, depending on the shipment.

For retail customers using the 48-hour Speed Post service, charges will be between ₹61 and ₹121 per packet based on weight and delivery distance.

At present, both the 24-hour and 48-hour Speed Post services are available only in six cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
