The government has implemented several important tasks for its citizens, and one of them involves linking PAN cards with Aadhaar cards.
Individuals were required to complete this process by June 30, 2023.
Failure to link PAN cards with Aadhaar cards by the deadline has resulted in the deactivation of PAN cards.
However, the Income Tax Department has now made an announcement stating that individuals can reactivate their PAN cards.
According to the Income Tax Department, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign nationals whose PANs have become inactive due to non-linking with Aadhaar need to provide proof of their residential address to the relevant Assessing Officer in order to revive their PAN cards.
This applies to Overseas Indians/Overseas Citizens of Indian Origin (OCI) as well, as some of them have expressed concerns about the inactivity of their PAN cards.
In a recent tweet, the Income Tax Department stated that if an NRI has filed an Income Tax Return (ITR) in any of the last three assessment years or has informed the concerned Assessing Officer (JAO) about their residential status,
the department has determined their residential status accordingly.
PAN cards become inactive in cases where NRIs have not updated their residential status or filed returns in the past three assessment years.
The Income Tax Department has urged NRIs whose PAN cards are inactive to submit relevant documents to their respective Assessing Officers.
They should request an update of their residential status in the PAN-related information.
