Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Warning in More Than 15 States

A major change in weather is being seen across India. In its latest bulletin released on May 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and heatwaves in many states.

While several states are facing intense heat, more than 15 states may receive heavy rainfall and strong storms today. According to IMD, thunderstorms with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph are likely in many areas.

At the same time, the Southwest Monsoon is moving forward quickly. Weather conditions are becoming favorable for the monsoon to advance further into parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal over the next 2-3 days.

Western Disturbance Active, Weather to Stay Unstable

The Meteorological Department said a Western Disturbance is currently active over Jammu and nearby areas in the form of cyclonic circulation. A trough has also formed from South Bihar to northern coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Because of these weather systems, many parts of the country are expected to witness rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds today.

Extremely Heavy Rain Alert for Northeast and East India

The biggest rainfall warning has been issued for northeastern and eastern states.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in:

Arunachal Pradesh

Assam

Meghalaya

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may also receive record-breaking rainfall today.

Heavy Rain Likely in South India

Several southern states are also expected to receive heavy rainfall today.

Wind speeds may reach 50-60 kmph and gust up to 70 kmph in some places.

Himachal Pradesh may also witness heavy hailstorms and thunderstorms today.

Strong Winds Alert in Many States

Lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph are expected in many states, including:

Bihar

Jharkhand

Odisha

Punjab

Uttarakhand

West Bengal

Sikkim

Telangana

Konkan and Goa

Central Maharashtra

Marathwada

Assam and Meghalaya

Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh may also see strong storms and rainfall.

Arunachal Pradesh may witness winds of 30-40 kmph, while coastal Karnataka and northeastern states could also experience thunderstorms with lightning.

Even though many states are getting rain relief, severe heatwave conditions continue in several regions.

People in Gangetic West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may face uncomfortable humidity and sticky heat today.

Fishermen Advised Not to Enter the Sea

The Meteorological Department has warned fishermen against going into the sea due to strong winds.
