Amid the ongoing farmers’ protest, a Parliamentary Committee has recommended doubling the financial assistance provided to farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Yojana.
The proposal suggests increasing the current yearly amount from Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000.
This recommendation was made by the Standing Committee for the Ministry of Agriculture, led by Charanjit Singh Channi, and was presented on December 17, 2024, in the Lok Sabha.
The committee urged the government to address this demand in the upcoming budget for 2025-26, which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present on February 1, 2025.
Background of the PM Kisan Samman Yojana
Launched in 2019, the PM Kisan Samman Yojana provides annual financial support of Rs 6,000 to small and medium farmers in three installments.
The money is directly transferred to the farmers’ bank accounts, ensuring transparency.
So far, the scheme has transferred Rs 3.45 lakh crore across 18 installments, benefiting millions of farmers.
The demand for increasing this amount is not new; farmer representatives have raised it in previous years during pre-budget meetings with the Finance Minister.
With the Parliamentary Committee’s recent suggestion, there is speculation that the government might consider announcing this increase to support farmers more effectively.
The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, will present the budget for 2025-26 on February 1, 2025.
