New Delhi:
Every day, millions of passengers rely on Indian Railways for their travel needs, encompassing a diverse range from children to the elderly.
Recognizing the unique requirements of senior citizens, the Railways extends special benefits to ease their journey,
notably through the allocation of lower berths.
Lower Berth Allocation:
In a bid to streamline the process and address passenger concerns, IRCTC sheds light on securing lower berths for senior citizens.
Recently, a passenger highlighted the challenge of securing a lower berth for his elderly uncle, emphasizing the importance of such arrangements due to mobility issues.
Reservation Choice Book:
In response to the passenger’s tweet, Indian Railways clarifies the mechanism for securing lower berths.
Booking under the general quota entails seat allotment based on availability, often resulting in upper berths if lower berths are unavailable.
However, opting for the Reservation Choice Book ensures priority allocation of lower berths,
catering specifically to the needs of senior citizens.
First-Come, First-Served:
Railway authorities underscore that seat allotment under the general quota operates on a first-come, first-served basis,
without manual intervention.
Passengers seeking lower berths are advised to engage with the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) onboard,
where negotiations can potentially lead to a lower berth if available, enhancing the travel experience for elderly passengers.
