DGCA Fines Air India ₹90 Lakh for Operating Flight with Unqualified Crew

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has fined Air India ₹90 lakh for operating a flight with non-qualified crew members.

Additionally, the Director of Operations and Director of Training at Air India have been fined ₹6 lakh and ₹3 lakh, respectively.

The pilot involved in the incident has been cautioned to avoid similar mistakes in the future.

Incident and Investigation Details

The violation was reported by Air India on July 10, 2024, leading to a comprehensive DGCA investigation into the airline’s operations.

The investigation revealed that a flight was commanded by a non-trainer line captain paired with a first officer who was not officially released for line duty.

This was considered a serious safety breach by the regulator.

The investigation uncovered several deficiencies and regulatory violations by Air India staff, which could have compromised safety.

Despite being given a chance to explain, the responses from the involved parties were unsatisfactory, prompting the DGCA to impose the fines.

Penalties and Warnings Issued

In response to the findings, show cause notices were issued to the flight’s commander and DGCA-approved post holders at Air India on July 22, 2024.

However, their replies failed to provide satisfactory justifications, leading the DGCA to enforce penalties as per existing rules and regulations.

The pilot involved has been warned to exercise greater caution in the future to prevent similar incidents.
