The Delhi government’s proposed ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance scheme for women has been given a new name.

The scheme, earlier known as Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, will now be called the Delhi Laxmi Yojana.

The proposal to rename the scheme was approved by the Rekha Gupta-led government on Monday.

Although the scheme was announced before the Delhi Assembly elections and funds have already been allocated, it is yet to be officially launched.

Why Was the Scheme Renamed?

The BJP had promised to provide ₹2,500 per month to poor and needy women under the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana before the Delhi Assembly elections.

A budget of ₹5,100 crore was also allocated for the scheme in the 2025 Delhi Budget.

However, the government later decided that its biggest welfare scheme should carry the name of the national capital while clearly indicating that it is meant exclusively for women.

As a result, the scheme has now been renamed Delhi Laxmi Yojana.

Launch Likely on Raksha Bandhan

Women in Delhi have been waiting for the scheme to begin, and reports suggest it could be launched on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.

According to reports, eligible beneficiaries may start receiving financial assistance from that day.

However, the full ₹2,500 may not be transferred directly into their bank accounts.

It is being reported that a part of the amount could be deposited as a Fixed Deposit (FD), while the remaining balance may be credited directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

An official confirmation on this arrangement is still awaited.

Who Will Be Eligible?

As per the reported eligibility criteria, the Delhi Laxmi Yojana will be available only to women who meet the following conditions:

Must be between 21 and 60 years of age.

Must have been a resident of Delhi for at least 10 years.

Annual family income should not exceed ₹2.5 lakh.

Should not have a criminal record.

Women who own a car, are government employees, or are retired will not be eligible for the scheme.

Ration Card Expected to Play a Key Role

The Delhi government has recently started issuing new ration cards and removed the names of people who were found to be ineligible after verification.

According to reports, the ration card is expected to be one of the most important documents for the Delhi Laxmi Yojana.

Eligible women may be identified and verified based on their ration card details before receiving the scheme’s benefits.

The government is yet to announce the official launch date and detailed application process for the scheme.
