Delhi–Kolkata Flights Get Costly Due to Voting Rush

As the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections get closer, flight ticket prices from Delhi to Kolkata are rising sharply.

The main reason is simple — a large number of people are traveling back home to vote. This sudden rush has pushed demand up, and ticket prices have followed.

People booking tickets at the last minute are now paying much higher fares than usual, putting extra pressure on their travel budget.

Why Are Flight Prices Increasing?

The biggest reason behind this surge is high demand. Normally, flight fares on the Delhi–Kolkata route stay between ₹5,000 and ₹7,000. But during election time, many travelers are heading home, leading to a spike in bookings.

Airlines adjust prices based on demand. As more people try to book tickets around the same dates, fares automatically increase. This is why prices are now much higher than usual.

Election Dates and Travel Rush

According to the Election Commission of India, voting for the 294-seat assembly will take place in two phases — April 23 and April 29. The results will be announced on May 4, 2026.

Travel demand is especially high just before these voting dates, as people want to reach their hometowns in time to cast their vote.

Current Flight Fare Situation

On April 23, ticket prices saw a major jump. Non-stop flights from Delhi to Kolkata reached nearly ₹32,000, while some fares even touched ₹36,000. This is a huge increase compared to regular prices.

Even on April 24, fares stayed high. Ticket prices ranged between ₹13,000 and ₹24,000, with some non-stop flights again going up to ₹32,000. Overall, travelers are facing expensive fares across most flights.

Prices Likely to Stay High

The second phase of voting on April 29 is expected to keep demand strong. As a result, ticket prices are likely to remain high in the coming days.

For example, fares for April 28 — just one day before voting — are already expensive. Tickets are priced around ₹13,000 to ₹15,000 on most flights.

In short, if you are planning to travel on this route during the election period, booking early could help you avoid these high prices.
