CGHS Rules have been expanded to include additional dependent family members under certain conditions.

The changes cover some adopted sisters as well as married sons and brothers who are suffering from serious illness or permanent disability.

The changes are aimed at extending medical coverage to eligible dependants who may continue to rely financially on the primary CGHS beneficiary because of illness or disability.

CGHS Rules Add Adopted Sisters

Under the revised provisions, legally adopted sisters of CGHS beneficiaries can be included as dependent family members, subject to the applicable conditions.

The eligibility conditions include normally residing with the CGHS beneficiary, having income within the prescribed limit and being unmarried, divorced or abandoned.

The conditions are intended to ensure that the benefit is available to genuinely dependent family members.

Married Sons and Brothers Get Wider Eligibility

The revised rules also provide coverage for certain married sons and brothers who are suffering from serious, chronic or incurable illnesses or permanent disabilities that affect their ability to earn.

Earlier provisions placed restrictions related to age and marital status for sons and other dependent family members.

Under the expanded provisions, marriage by itself does not end eligibility where the prescribed medical and dependency conditions are fulfilled.

The Central Health Ministry has previously issued CGHS instructions allowing certain dependent sons with permanent disabilities to continue receiving CGHS facilities beyond the age of 25, subject to the applicable conditions.

Rules for Daughters and Sisters Also Continue

Dependent daughters and sisters can continue to remain eligible under the applicable CGHS conditions.

Their eligibility is linked to factors such as marital status, employment, dependency and residence with the primary beneficiary.

The expanded provisions are intended to provide continued medical support to family members who remain dependent because of serious illness or disability.

What the CGHS Expansion Means

The expansion can provide additional medical coverage to eligible dependants who previously faced restrictions because of age or marriage.

However, inclusion is not automatic and the prescribed dependency and medical conditions must be satisfied.

The changes are part of the broader CGHS framework governing medical facilities for eligible Central Government employees, pensioners and their dependent family members.

Earlier CGHS provisions have also expanded the definition of eligible family members in specific circumstances.
