If you receive a call from an unknown number, you often wonder who is calling. This problem may soon be a thing of the past.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has instructed telecom companies to display the caller’s name for unknown numbers.
Trials for this feature have begun in Mumbai and Haryana, and the initial phase has been successful.
This new feature, called ‘Calling Name Presentation’ (CNP), will be available nationwide from July 15.
How CNP Service Works
The CNP service will display the caller’s name based on the information provided in the KYC form when purchasing the SIM card.
The main aim of this service is to reduce spam, fraud calls, and cybercrime.
Telecom companies initiated this trial under pressure from the government and TRAI.
During incoming calls, the caller’s name will appear along with the number, similar to existing caller ID applications, but without negatively impacting business operations.
This measure is expected to significantly help in preventing cybercrime and reducing spam calls, which have become a major issue.
According to a survey, 60% of people receive at least three spam calls daily.
Blocking Fake International Calls
The central government has also instructed telecom operators to block fake international calls that display Indian numbers.
This directive came after the Department of Telecom (DOT) received numerous complaints about cybercrime and financial fraud being committed through these calls.
