The Delhi government has taken a big step to improve food security for people living in the capital.

The Delhi Cabinet has approved a proposal to increase the annual income limit for ration cards under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Earlier, only families earning up to ₹1.2 lakh annually could apply for ration cards. Now, the limit has been raised to ₹2.5 lakh per year.

This decision is expected to help millions of low-income and lower-middle-income families who were previously left out of the scheme.

Government Says Old Income Limit Was Too Low

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the earlier income limit no longer matched current economic conditions.

According to him, an annual income of around ₹1 lakh is not enough for a family to manage basic daily expenses in today’s time.

Keeping this in mind, the government decided to increase the eligibility limit so that more needy families can get affordable ration support.

The government also said this move follows Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s promise to strengthen food security and welfare services in Delhi.

Ration Subsidy May Soon Go Directly to Digital Wallets

The Delhi government is also planning to modernize the ration distribution system by making it more technology-driven and transparent.

Under the proposed CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency)-based smart ration model, subsidy money may be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ digital wallets.

People will then be able to buy ration items from authorized shops according to their needs.

The system will be introduced in phases, and private banks may also be connected to it in the future.
