The Exceptional Bhakra-Nangal Train Experience
Route and Purpose: Running along the border of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, the Bhakra-Nangal Train covers a 13-kilometer journey.
Primarily serving officials and employees associated with the Bhakra Beas Management Board, this train has been transporting people to and from the Bhakra Nangal Dam for decades.
Surprisingly, the train is not owned by Indian Railways but by the Bhakra Beas Management Board.
Distinctive Features:
- Special Coaches: The train’s coaches are uniquely manufactured in Karachi, with specific ones designated for tourists and women. Notably, there are no Ticket Collectors (TT) aboard.
- Diesel Engine: Operating on a diesel engine, the Bhakra-Nangal Train consumes 50 liters of diesel daily.
- Historic Origin: Initially, the train ran on a steam engine. In 1953, it transitioned to three modern engines imported from America. Remarkably, the 60-year-old engines are still in use.
Free Travel for All:
For 75 years, common people have been able to travel for free on this train, making it a cherished experience for those visiting the Bhakra Nangal Dam.
Despite its official use, the Bhakra-Nangal Train welcomes passengers at no cost, providing a unique and cost-free journey amid the soaring ticket prices elsewhere in the rail network.
