Aadhaar Update: The biometric details in children’s Aadhaar cards will now be updated directly in schools across the country.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is launching a new plan for this.
Under the scheme, the biometric data of children aged 5 years and above will be updated through schools. This process will start in phases within the next 2 months.
Biometrics of 7 Crore Children Still Not Updated
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar shared that biometric updates for nearly 7 crore children are still pending. According to UIDAI rules, these updates must be done after a child turns 5 years old.
Why Is a Biometric Update Important?
UIDAI says biometric updates are free between the ages of 5 and 7. But once a child turns older than 7, and the update hasn’t been done, a fee of ₹100 is charged.
If the update still isn’t done after that, the child’s Aadhaar may be deactivated. Updated Aadhaar makes it easier for children to access government schemes, school admissions, scholarships, entrance exams, and more.
Coordination with Schools
UIDAI will carry out biometric updates in schools with parental consent. Technical checks are already in progress. The service is expected to launch in 45 to 60 days.
Biometric machines will be sent to every district, and teams will visit schools so that maximum children can be covered.
Second Update at Age 15 to Be Done in Schools Too
UIDAI also plans to carry out a second biometric update when children turn 15, again through schools or colleges.
Currently, Aadhaar is issued to children under 5 without biometrics, but updates are required after they turn 5.
UIDAI says Aadhaar helps children receive timely benefits from government schemes, and linking the update process with schools will make it much easier and faster.
