Smartphones have become an essential part of our daily lives, and it’s hard to imagine even a few hours without them.
However, a phone is incomplete without a SIM card, as it cannot function without one.
Having a valid SIM card is crucial, and recently, the telecom industry has introduced several new rules to prevent cyber fraud.
Here’s everything you need to know about the updated SIM card regulations.
Aadhaar Verification is Now Mandatory
According to CNBC TV18, biometric verification through Aadhaar is now compulsory for activating a new SIM card.
This step has been implemented to enhance security and prevent fraudulent activities.
New Rules for Retailers Selling SIM Cards
The government has also introduced strict guidelines for retailers who sell SIM cards. Retailers must now follow a set process before issuing a new SIM:
1) They must verify how many SIM connections are already registered in the customer’s name.
2) If a customer has SIM cards registered under different names, this will be checked.
3) Additionally, the retailer must take the customer’s photograph from 10 different angles.
Fines for Exceeding SIM Card Limit
As per the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) rules:
1) A person can own a maximum of 9 SIM cards under their Aadhaar.
2) If someone has more than 9 SIM cards, they will be fined ₹50,000 for the first offense.
3) For repeat offenses, the fine increases to ₹2 lakh.
Strict Punishment for Illegal SIM Card Use
Obtaining a SIM card through fraudulent means can lead to serious consequences:
1) A fine of up to ₹50 lakh can be imposed.
2) Offenders may also face three years of imprisonment.
To avoid any issues, it’s important to keep track of how many SIM cards are linked to your Aadhaar and disconnect any that are not in use.

You can easily check and manage the SIM cards linked to your Aadhaar by following these steps:
