Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has introduced the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, offering customers of the Rooftop Solar Scheme the benefit of 300 units of free electricity.
Under this scheme, common people can avail a maximum subsidy of Rs 78,000, aimed at benefiting the poor and middle class across the country. Here’s how you can apply for this initiative.
New Guidelines and Incentives
The existing rooftop solar scheme for homes, formerly known as ‘Rooftop Solar Program Phase-II’, underwent significant changes and was renamed ‘PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme’ on February 13, 2024.
The government has allocated over Rs 75,000 crore for this revamped scheme.
How Villagers Can Benefit
To avail of the scheme, applicants need to visit the nearest post office with necessary documents.
These documents include a copy of the electricity bill, the mobile number linked to the electricity bill, and the Aadhaar card.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, customers are entitled to free electricity up to 300 units, along with a maximum subsidy of Rs 78,000.
Installing solar panels under this scheme can help families save Rs 15,000-18,000 annually.
Subsidy Enhancement
The government has significantly increased subsidies under the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme’.
For instance, installing a 1-KW rooftop solar system will now fetch a subsidy of at least Rs 30,000, up from Rs 18,000 in the previous scheme.
Similarly, the subsidy for a 2-KW system has increased to Rs 60,000 from Rs 36,000, and for a 3-KW system, it is now Rs 78,000.
Application Process
To apply for the scheme, visit www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register. Select your state and electric distribution company, then provide your electricity consumer number, mobile number, and email ID.
Once you receive feasibility approval from the local distribution company, you can proceed to install the solar system through a registered vendor listed on the website.
Timely Subsidy Disbursement
After installing the solar system, submit plant details and apply for a net meter. Following the installation of the net meter and inspection by the DISCOM, a commissioning certificate will be generated on the portal.
Submit your bank account details and a canceled check through the portal, and the subsidy money will be credited to your account within 30 days.
