For travelers taking to the skies, recent announcements by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) bring a sigh of relief.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation, led by Minister of State General VK Singh, has introduced comprehensive rules outlining passengers’ rights in the event of flight cancellations or delays.
Immediate Full Refund and Additional Compensation
In the event of flight cancellation, passengers are now entitled to either an alternate flight or a full refund of the ticket fare.
The airline is also required to provide additional compensation to affected passengers.
Moreover, when a subsequent flight is arranged due to the cancellation, the airline must offer complimentary food and refreshment services during the waiting period.
Passengers’ Rights and Airline Obligations
Outlined on the DGCA website, these new regulations clarify the rights of passengers and the obligations of airline companies in case of flight disruptions. Here are some key points:
1) Refund and Compensation: The passenger is entitled to a full refund of the ticket fare or compensation for hotel stays and transportation in the event of flight cancellation or delay.
However, if the disruption is due to circumstances beyond the airline’s control, such as extraordinary events, compensation may not be applicable.
2) Flight Delay: Passengers facing a 2-hour delay are entitled to free refreshments.
For delays exceeding 3 hours within a block period of 2.5 to 5 hours, complimentary refreshments are a mandatory provision.
3) Advance Notice for 6-Hour Delays
In the case of a 6-hour delay, the airline must inform passengers 24 hours prior to the original flight time and provide options for alternative flights.
4) Cancellation 2 Weeks Prior
If a flight is canceled two weeks before its scheduled departure, the airline is obligated to either offer an alternative flight or a full refund.
These new regulations aim to empower and protect air travelers, ensuring fair treatment and compensation in cases of flight disruptions.
Passengers can now travel with greater confidence, knowing their rights are firmly established and protected by these aviation guidelines.
