HDFC Bank Digital Rupee is being developed for new payment uses that could let customers make purchases during flights, redeem credit card rewards and receive purpose-specific corporate allowances.
The bank is expanding the use cases around the Reserve Bank of India’s central bank digital currency, or CBDC, with several new features under development.
HDFC Bank Digital Rupee for Flight Payments
HDFC Bank is working on offline digital rupee payments for flights.
Customers could tap their phones on the bank’s point-of-sale devices onboard aircraft to pay for food, beverages and seat upgrades even when there is no internet connectivity.
The proposed offline facility could be useful for in-flight purchases where conventional online payment connectivity may not be available.
Rewards Could Be Converted Into Digital Rupees
Under another planned use case, customers will be able to redeem credit card reward points against digital rupees. The digital currency could then be used across categories such as dining, fuel, apparel and electronics.
The redemption system is also being developed to allow rewards to be converted down to the last paise, giving customers greater flexibility in using their accumulated points.
HDFC Bank is also developing digital rupee gift vouchers for customer promotions.
Once a qualifying event takes place, the voucher could be credited to the customer’s digital rupee wallet and used by scanning a UPI QR code at participating merchants.
Corporate Allowances Get a New Digital Option
The bank is developing a digital rupee portal through its corporate net-banking platform for business customers. Companies could use it to distribute meal, fuel and travel allowances directly in digital rupees.
The planned system would support programmable payouts, allowing businesses to restrict how the funds can be used according to their intended purpose.
The Reserve Bank of India has previously highlighted defined-purpose uses for the digital rupee, including employee allowances.
The CBDC is the central bank’s digital form of the Indian rupee and is being tested through participating banks.
Digital Rupee Wallets to Work With BHIM
HDFC Bank is also working to make its digital rupee wallets available through BHIM.
This would allow customers to make UPI-style merchant payments directly from their CBDC wallets and could expand the number of places where digital rupees can be used.
These developments show how banks are exploring uses for the digital rupee beyond simple digital payments, including rewards, corporate disbursements and offline transactions.
The proposed features are part of HDFC Bank’s broader digital rupee expansion and include multiple payment options aimed at making the CBDC more useful for everyday and purpose-specific transactions.
