Railway Ticket UPI Charges Above Rs 2000 will change from October 15, 2026, when a new Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework takes effect.
For railway ticket payments above Rs 2,000 through UPI, a flat Rs 5 MDR will apply on the merchant side.
Railway Ticket UPI Charges Above Rs 2000
Under the new framework, railway ticket payments above Rs 2,000 made through UPI will attract a flat Rs 5 MDR instead of the standard 0.4 per cent charge applicable to certain other merchant transactions.
The key point for passengers is that the Rs 5 charge is not supposed to be added separately to the railway ticket fare. The charge applies on the merchant side.
Who Will Pay the Rs 5 UPI Charge
Railway passengers will not have to pay the additional Rs 5 MDR merely because their ticket costs more than Rs 2,000 and is paid through UPI.
The charge is intended to be borne on the merchant side.
For example, a railway ticket costing Rs 3,000 and paid through UPI should remain Rs 3,000 rather than becoming Rs 3,005 because of the new MDR.
What Happens to UPI Payments Below Rs 2000
UPI transactions up to Rs 2,000 remain outside the new MDR framework for these merchant payments.
Person-to-person UPI transfers also remain free irrespective of the transaction amount.
The railway ticketing sector has been placed in a special category under the new structure, along with certain other sectors including telecom, insurance, fuel and utility payments.
Why Railway Ticket UPI Charges Matter
The flat Rs 5 MDR is lower than what a 0.4 per cent charge would amount to on higher-value railway ticket transactions.
For instance, a Rs 5,000 payment would attract Rs 20 at 0.4 per cent, while the railway-ticket category would have a flat Rs 5 MDR.
The new charge is a payment-processing cost and does not automatically mean that railway fares will increase.
Passengers should therefore check the final ticket amount shown during booking rather than assuming that the MDR will be added to the fare.
