The government has now mandated that at least one out of every three retail fuel outlets must offer an alternative fuel facility within the next three years.
The move is aimed at making cleaner energy options more easily available across the country and reducing dependence on traditional petrol and diesel.
Fuel stations can choose from several options, including CNG, LNG, biofuels, electric vehicle (EV) charging and battery-swapping facilities.
Fuel Stations Get Three Years to Meet the Target
Under the new requirement, fuel marketing companies must ensure that at least one in every three outlets in their network provides one of the approved alternative fuel options.
The government wants alternative fuel facilities to become a common feature of India’s fuel network rather than being limited to a few major cities.
This could make it easier for consumers to find CNG stations, EV charging points and other cleaner fuel options while travelling.
Existing Fuel Outlets Must Submit Details
Fuel retail outlets commissioned between November 8, 2019, and August 10, 2026, will need to provide details about their operations and alternative fuel facilities.
Fuel marketing companies will have to report the number of outlets they operate, including those that have been operational for more than three years.
They will also need to identify outlets that already provide alternative fuel facilities and report any shortfall.
This information must be submitted within one month.
Six Months to Correct Any Shortfall
After the shortfall is identified, fuel retailers will get six months to meet the required target.
Companies that fail to comply could face a penalty of up to ₹10 lakh per outlet.
The penalty is intended to encourage fuel retailers to invest in alternative fuel infrastructure rather than simply report that their outlets do not have the required facilities.
What Alternative Fuel Options Can Fuel Stations Add?
Fuel retailers have several choices for meeting the new requirement.
They can install:
CNG facilities
LNG facilities
Biofuel facilities
EV charging stations
Battery-swapping facilities
This flexibility allows companies to select the option that is most suitable for a particular location.
For example, an outlet in an area with a growing number of electric vehicles may choose to install EV chargers, while another location may find CNG or biofuel infrastructure more practical.
New Fuel Retailers Also Get a Target
The government has also introduced requirements for companies entering the fuel retail business.
New fuel retailers will need to establish at least 100 outlets within five years.
Some of these outlets will also have to be located in remote areas, helping expand fuel infrastructure beyond major cities and urban centres.

The new policy could gradually make alternative fuel options easier to find across India.
As more fuel stations add EV charging, CNG, LNG, biofuel or battery-swapping facilities, consumers may have more choices when it comes to powering their vehicles.
