Indian Railways has introduced a new online personal luggage booking facility to make train travel more convenient.

Starting July 31, passengers with confirmed reserved tickets can book and pay for excess luggage online without visiting a railway parcel office.

The new service is part of Indian Railways’ efforts to expand digital services and make the travel experience smoother for passengers.

Who Can Use This Facility?

The online luggage booking service is available only for passengers who have a confirmed reserved train ticket.

While booking tickets online, passengers can also book excess personal luggage in the same process, provided the luggage is within the maximum weight limit allowed for their travel class.

This means travelers no longer have to complete separate paperwork or visit parcel offices before their journey.

Free Luggage Rules Remain the Same

Indian Railways has made it clear that the new service does not change the existing luggage rules.

Passengers can continue carrying luggage within the free allowance allowed for their travel class without paying any extra charges.

Only baggage that exceeds the free limit will require online luggage booking and payment.

The facility will not be available for travel classes where the free luggage allowance and the maximum permitted luggage limit are the same.

What Information Will Be Available During Booking?

When booking excess luggage online, passengers will be able to see important details, including:

Free luggage allowance for their travel class

Maximum luggage weight permitted

List of prohibited and restricted items

Charges for excess baggage

Penalties for carrying luggage beyond the allowed limit without booking

This information will help passengers understand the rules before starting their journey.

No More Visits to Parcel Offices

Earlier, passengers carrying extra luggage had to visit railway parcel offices separately to complete the booking process.

With the launch of the online facility, everything can now be completed during ticket booking itself.

This is expected to save time and make travel easier, especially for families, students, long-distance travelers, and people shifting to a new city.

The system has been developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and implemented across Indian Railways after approval from the Railway Board.

Another Step Towards Digital Railway Services

Indian Railways has been adding several digital services in recent years, including online ticket booking, e-catering, real-time train tracking, and AI-powered passenger support.

The new online luggage booking facility is another step toward making railway services more modern, convenient, and passenger-friendly while reducing paperwork and manual processes.
