Ontario, Canada’s most popular province for immigrants, has completely changed its Ontario Provincial Nominee Program (OINP) by introducing a new and simplified immigration pathway.
The changes are expected to affect thousands of Indian students, professionals and skilled workers who are hoping to get permanent residency (PR) in Canada.
Ontario is home to major cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, Brampton, Mississauga and Hamilton, making it one of the most preferred destinations for newcomers.
Ontario Replaces 8 Immigration Streams with One New Program
Ontario has scrapped its eight employer-driven nomination streams and replaced them with a single system called the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream.
Along with this change, the province has also ended the old Expression of Interest (EOI) system.
Any applications already submitted under the previous EOI system have been cancelled.
A new application process is expected to open between July and September, and all eligible candidates, including Indian applicants, will need to submit a fresh EOI and job offer under the new system.
Although applicants will have to start again, the new process is designed to make the immigration system simpler and more transparent.
More Jobs Now Eligible for Ontario PR
One of the biggest changes is that Ontario has expanded eligibility to include all TEER 0 to TEER 5 occupations under Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC).
Earlier, many job categories were not eligible for the provincial nomination program. Now, professionals across a much wider range of occupations can apply.
The new stream has been divided into three categories:
TEER 0–3: High-skilled professionals.
TEER 4–5: Intermediate and other skilled workers.
Self-Employed Physicians: A separate pathway for qualified doctors.
This means more Indian workers, from IT professionals and engineers to technicians and other skilled employees, may now have a better chance of qualifying for Ontario PR.
Ontario Work Experience Will Give You an Advantage
The new system gives extra importance to candidates who have already studied or worked in Ontario.
Applicants with Ontario work experience and a Canadian income tax history will receive higher scores in the new Expression of Interest ranking system.
This could significantly improve their chances of receiving a provincial nomination.
Candidates with job offers in Ontario’s regional areas will also receive additional points.
Healthcare professionals, skilled trades workers and people working in the transport sector are expected to receive higher occupation-based scores.
Nurses, healthcare workers and technical trade professionals are likely to benefit the most from these changes.
What Indian Students and Workers Should Do
Canada’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) will continue to play an important role in selecting candidates for permanent residency.
Factors such as education, age, work experience and qualifications will still determine your CRS score.
Under the new Ontario Workforce Priority Stream, applicants must first submit a new Expression of Interest (EOI) once the application system reopens.
Since all previous EOIs have been cancelled, eligible candidates will need to apply again.
The updated system is expected to give higher priority to work permit holders than study permit holders.
This means Indian students who have completed their studies and are currently working in Canada on a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) could have a stronger chance of securing Ontario PR.
