A major change in weather is being seen across India. In its latest bulletin released on May 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and heatwaves in many states.
While several states are facing intense heat, more than 15 states may receive heavy rainfall and strong storms today. According to IMD, thunderstorms with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph are likely in many areas.
At the same time, the Southwest Monsoon is moving forward quickly. Weather conditions are becoming favorable for the monsoon to advance further into parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal over the next 2-3 days.
Western Disturbance Active, Weather to Stay Unstable
The Meteorological Department said a Western Disturbance is currently active over Jammu and nearby areas in the form of cyclonic circulation. A trough has also formed from South Bihar to northern coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Because of these weather systems, many parts of the country are expected to witness rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds today.
Extremely Heavy Rain Alert for Northeast and East India
The biggest rainfall warning has been issued for northeastern and eastern states.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in:

Assam
Meghalaya
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may also receive record-breaking rainfall today.

Several southern states are also expected to receive heavy rainfall today.

Himachal Pradesh may also witness heavy hailstorms and thunderstorms today.

Lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph are expected in many states, including:

Odisha
Punjab
Uttarakhand
West Bengal
Sikkim
Telangana
Konkan and Goa

Arunachal Pradesh may witness winds of 30-40 kmph, while coastal Karnataka and northeastern states could also experience thunderstorms with lightning.
