Indian airline IndiGo has recently launched direct flights from Chennai to Réunion Island, a move that is gaining attention for both tourism and cultural reasons.

Réunion is not just another international destination—it has a strong historical and people-to-people connection with India.

Where Is Réunion Island?

Réunion Island is located in the Indian Ocean and is currently a French overseas territory.

It lies:

East of Madagascar

Southwest of Mauritius

Relatively close to India’s southern coast, especially Chennai

Because of this proximity, direct flights from Chennai started on April 29, 2026.

This is now IndiGo’s 46th international destination.

Flight Schedule and Route Details

IndiGo is operating three weekly flights on this route using Airbus A320 aircraft.

Flight details:

Route: Chennai → Réunion (6E 1871)

Days: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday

Departure: 12:20 PM (IST)

Arrival: 5:10 PM (local time)

Return: Same day at 6:10 PM

Arrival in Chennai: 2:10 AM next day

This makes travel between the two regions much faster and more convenient.

Why Did IndiGo Start This Route?

One of the biggest reasons is the strong Indian connection.

Nearly one-third of Réunion’s population (around 300,000 people) is of Indian origin.

This creates steady travel demand between India and the island.

The route is also expected to support:

Family and cultural visits

Business travel

Medical and wellness tourism

IndiGo saw this as a natural high-demand opportunity.

What Makes Réunion Attractive for Indians?

Beyond cultural ties, Réunion is becoming an emerging travel destination.

The island is known for:

Volcanic mountains and scenic landscapes

Dense rainforests and waterfalls

Beautiful beaches and coral lagoons

It is also a hub for adventure activities like:

Paragliding

Snorkeling

Whale watching

Canyoning

Several parts of the island, including its natural formations like pitons, cirques, and ramparts, are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Visa-Free Travel Is a Big Advantage

One of the biggest travel benefits for Indians is that Réunion offers visa-free entry for up to 15 days, under certain conditions.

This makes it an easy short-haul international destination for Indian tourists.

The island is also developing its tourism infrastructure, making it suitable for:

Leisure travel

Adventure tourism

MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions)

The Bottom Line

The launch of the Chennai–Réunion direct flight by IndiGo is more than just a new air route.

It connects India with a culturally linked island that is rich in natural beauty and tourism potential.

With easy visa access and strong Indian roots, Réunion could soon become a popular getaway for Indian travelers looking for something new beyond traditional international destinations.
