A big boost for connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir is here.
From April 30, 2026, the Vande Bharat Express will run directly between Jammu and Srinagar.
This means passengers can now travel the 266 km route in under five hours.
Until now, people had to rely on road travel, which often gets disrupted due to landslides and snowfall.
No More Transfers: A Long-Pending Demand Met
The train will now run from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar without any change.
Earlier, the service operated between Katra and Srinagar. Now, it has been extended to Jammu, making travel much easier.
This move comes after the completion of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a major project inaugurated by Narendra Modi in 2025.
Inaugural Journey: Timing and Route
The first special train (No. 02601) will begin its journey from Jammu Tawi.
Here’s the schedule:
Departure: 10:30 am from Jammu Tawi
Stop at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra: 11:54 am to 11:59 am
Arrival: 3:05 pm in Srinagar
The train will also have a technical halt at Bijbehara.
The service will be flagged off by Ashwini Vaishnaw, with Jitendra Singh also expected to attend.
Faster, Safer and More Reliable Travel
This new train will significantly cut travel time compared to road journeys.
Road travel between Jammu and Srinagar can take much longer due to difficult terrain and unpredictable weather.
The train offers a safer and more reliable option, especially during winters when highways are often closed.
Built for Extreme Winters
What makes this train special is its ability to run in harsh weather.
It comes with advanced winter-ready technology, including:
Heating systems to prevent water pipes from freezing
Heated water tanks and bio-toilets
Special windshield heating for better visibility
Systems to maintain braking performance in cold conditions
This makes it the first train in India designed for extreme winter operations.
Big Boost for Tourism and Economy
The new rail link is expected to benefit the region in many ways.
It will:
Make travel easier for tourists
Help local businesses and traders
Improve daily commuting for residents
With 20 coaches instead of 8, the train can carry more passengers, helping meet high demand.
The Bottom Line
The Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat is more than just a new train.
It’s a major step towards better connectivity, faster travel, and stronger economic growth in the region.
For travelers, it means a smoother, quicker, and more dependable journey to the Kashmir Valley.
