Amid discussions around the 8th Pay Commission, central government employees have received some good news.

The Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications has clarified the rules for Children’s Education Allowance (CEA).

With these new FAQs, employees now have a clear idea about how much they will get and how to claim it. This will make the process easier and reduce confusion.

How Much Allowance Will You Get?

Under the updated rules, employees will receive a fixed amount every month:

₹2,812.5 per month as Children’s Education Allowance (CEA)

₹8,437.5 per month as hostel subsidy (if the child stays in a hostel)

This amount is fixed, which means it will not change based on actual expenses.

However, there is a benefit. Whenever Dearness Allowance (DA) increases by 50%, the CEA will automatically increase by 25%.

Important Rules You Should Know

There are a few key conditions to keep in mind:

This benefit is available only for up to two eldest children

If both parents are government employees, only one can claim it

The child must study in a recognized school or institution

Claims can be made only once a year, after the financial year ends

These rules ensure that the allowance is distributed fairly and systematically.

Relief Under NEP-2020 and Pre-School Classes

The government has also provided relief under the New Education Policy (NEP-2020).

If a child has to repeat a class, a one-time special exemption will be allowed.

Also, CEA will now cover pre-school education, including:

Nursery

LKG

UKG

This rule is effective from the academic session 2023–24, giving more support to parents from an early stage of education.

Documents Required and Other Conditions

To claim the allowance, employees need a simple certificate from the school head confirming that the child studied there during the previous academic year.

For hostel subsidy, the certificate must clearly mention boarding and lodging charges.

There are also some important additional points:

Employees on leave or even under suspension will still receive CEA

If an employee retires, is dismissed, or leaves the job, the allowance will continue till the end of that academic year

In case of reinstatement by a court, the final decision will be taken by the competent authority
