Singapore offers a special 96-hour visa-free transit facility (VFTF) for travellers passing through the country on their way to another destination.
This option is useful for Indian passport holders who want to step out of the airport and explore Singapore during a long layover.
Here’s a simple explanation of how it works and who can use it.
What Is Singapore’s 96-Hour Visa-Free Transit Facility?
The VFTF allows eligible travellers to stay in Singapore for up to four days without applying for a visa.
It is only available when Singapore is a stopover on the way to a third country.
Entry is not automatic, as immigration officers take the final call after checking documents and travel plans.
Key Conditions You Must Follow
Indian passport holders can use this facility only if they leave Singapore within 96 hours.
You may enter Singapore by any mode of transport, but departure must be by air or sea within the allowed time.
You must also be travelling to or returning from a third country. Singapore cannot be your final destination under this facility.
Visa Requirement for Indian Travellers
To qualify, Indian citizens must hold a valid visa or residence permit from one of these countries: the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, or Switzerland.
This visa must be valid for at least one month from your date of arrival in Singapore.
Even travellers with a single-entry visa can use VFTF on their return journey, as long as they are coming back from the country that issued the visa and are not flying directly to India.
Who Needs to Clear Immigration?
Passengers who stay inside the airport transit area and do not clear immigration do not need VFTF.
However, if you need to collect luggage, check in again, or get a boarding pass, you must pass through immigration and meet all VFTF conditions.
Many low-cost airlines require passengers to clear immigration during transit, so it is important to confirm procedures with your airline before travelling.
A Great Way to Explore Singapore
Meeting all requirements does not guarantee entry, as immigration officers make the final decision at the airport.
If approved, Indian travellers can enjoy up to four days in Singapore without a visa, making it a great opportunity to explore the city during a long stopover.
