If you are an engineering student looking for real-world experience, this new opportunity from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) could be a major boost to your career.

Along with hands-on training in road construction, the internship also offers a monthly stipend of ₹20,000.

The program is being launched by the Ministry of Road Transport in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education, Government of India, and will start from January 19.

What This Internship Offers

NHAI has introduced a dedicated internship portal to connect students with live national highway projects across India.

Interns will get a chance to work on more than 150 major highway projects, giving them direct exposure to large-scale infrastructure development.

Each project will take four interns, which means around 600 students will be selected in the first phase.

Students from IITs, NITs, and AICTE-approved colleges are eligible to apply.

Internships are available for 1 month, 2 months, or 6 months, allowing students to choose what fits their schedule.

Every intern will receive a monthly stipend of ₹20,000, which can help cover study-related expenses, accommodation, travel, and daily needs.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

This internship is designed under NEP 2020, which focuses on combining classroom learning with practical experience.

During the program, students will learn how highways are planned, how engineering designs are created, and how construction work is executed on-site.

While the internship mainly targets civil engineering students, candidates from IT, electronics, and electrical engineering backgrounds can also apply.

Strong Response and Future Expansion

The response to NHAI’s internship initiative has been encouraging.

Around 250 students participated in the recent winter internship program, and the upcoming six-month internship starting on January 19, 2026, has already received over 500 applications.

NHAI also plans to open the program to postgraduate students in the near future.

For young engineers who want to gain practical skills and contribute to building India’s infrastructure, this internship offers a valuable and rewarding opportunity.
