The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has released new details about the upcoming metro corridor connecting Millennium City Centre to Cyber Hub — a project that’s set to transform travel across the city’s busiest business zones.
The metro will run at speeds of up to 90 kmph, with trains arriving every five minutes during peak hours, promising faster and smoother travel for daily commuters.
Compact Start, Big Future: Train Design and Capacity
In the first phase, the Gurugram Metro will feature three-coach trains capable of carrying up to 975 passengers.
As ridership grows, GMRL plans to expand these to six-coach trains, which will accommodate around 2,000 passengers.
To kick things off, 26 trains—a total of 78 stainless-steel coaches—will be procured. Each coach will be 3.9 metres high and 2.9 metres wide, following international safety and design standards.
A senior GMRL official said this design ensures comfort, efficiency, and safety while preparing for future increases in passenger demand.
Rising Costs: Metro Depot Gets Major Upgrade
The cost of building the new metro depot near Marble Market in Sector 33 has tripled, jumping from ₹110 crore to ₹332 crore.
The expansion was necessary as the depot area increased from 5.5 hectares to 22.86 hectares, and its track length grew from 6 km to 18 km.
This expansion will allow GMRL to handle more trains, perform better maintenance, and support long-term operations as the metro network grows.
Underground Line May Face Delays
Plans for an underground metro route in Old Gurugram as part of Phase 2 are also being considered.
However, officials have warned that this could delay the project by up to 18 months.
The reason? An underground corridor would require new surveys, environmental clearances, and geotechnical studies.
While this option could reduce congestion on the surface, it would also significantly increase project costs.
“An underground system could solve several urban challenges, but it will take more time and money to execute,” said a senior GMRL official.
The Road Ahead
With faster trains, expanded facilities, and future-ready planning, the Gurugram Metro is positioning itself as a game-changer for urban transport in the region.
However, balancing speed, cost, and expansion will be key to ensuring the city’s most ambitious metro project stays on track.
