BSNL has now joined private telecom providers like Airtel, Jio, and Vi by offering eSIM services in select regions.
An eSIM works like a regular SIM card but is embedded in devices such as iPhones, Google Pixels, and Samsung Galaxy S series, providing better network connectivity.
More people in India are now switching from physical SIM cards to eSIMs, and major carriers—Airtel, Jio, Vi, and BSNL—are making this service available in various areas.
Benefits of eSIM
Built-in SIM: Unlike physical SIM cards, eSIMs are built into the device, so they cannot wear out, get lost, or get physically damaged.
Multiple Numbers: Users can store several mobile numbers on one device, making it easy to separate personal and work contacts.
Easy Network Switching: New plans can be activated digitally without changing the SIM physically.
Note: Deleting an eSIM by mistake will immediately disconnect the network, so handle eSIM settings carefully to avoid losing connectivity.
How to Apply for an eSIM
Jio: Request via the MyJio app or visit the nearest Jio store.
Airtel and Vi: Apply using the official apps, or send an SMS to 121 or 199 (depending on your carrier) with the text “eSIM”.
BSNL: Visit the nearest customer service center and complete the KYC process, presenting your Aadhaar card.
Steps to Activate Your eSIM
Ensure your eSIM request has been successfully submitted to your carrier.
Check your registered email for the eSIM QR code.
On your phone, go to Settings → Mobile Networks / Cellular / SIM Services.
Select Add eSIM or Download eSIM.
Choose Use QR Code and scan the code from your email.
Complete activation by responding to the IVR call from your carrier.
After Activation
Once the eSIM is active, your physical SIM will be deactivated automatically.
All network services will transfer to the eSIM.
Per TRAI regulations, SMS services will be unavailable for 24 hours to prevent SIM-swap fraud, ensuring the safety of your mobile number and personal information.
