The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has brought a new rule to stop the misuse of Aadhaar numbers after a person’s death.
Till now, Aadhaar IDs of more than 1.17 crore deceased people have already been deactivated.
To make this process easy for everyone, UIDAI has started a new service called ‘Reporting of Death of a Family Member’ on its myAadhaar portal.
This step will help prevent fraudsters from using Aadhaar numbers of dead persons for fake claims or other illegal work.
Where is this facility available?
Right now, this online service is available in 24 states and union territories where the Civil Registration System (CRS) is active.
What do you need to do?
First, the family must collect the death certificate from the local municipal office. After that, they can follow these simple steps online.
Steps to Deactivate Aadhaar after Death:
1️⃣ Visit https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/file-complaint
2️⃣ Click on ‘Report Death of a Family Member’
3️⃣ Login using your Aadhaar number and OTP
4️⃣ Fill in the details of the deceased person, like their Aadhaar number and death registration number
5️⃣ Upload the death certificate
6️⃣ Mention how you are related to the deceased
7️⃣ Submit the self-declaration form
After submitting, UIDAI will verify the details from official records. Once verified, the Aadhaar number will be deactivated.
What’s next?
UIDAI has also requested the Registrar General of India to share more death records with them. They are also trying to collect this information from banks and other organizations.
Sometimes, Aadhaar numbers get deactivated automatically if the records already match. This entire step is part of UIDAI’s plan to keep India’s Aadhaar system safe, clean, and updated.
UIDAI said more states and union territories will be added soon to this facility.
