The Indian Postal Department has introduced a new digital addressing system called Digipin to improve the traditional PIN code system.
While PIN codes help identify areas, delivery agents often face trouble finding the exact address. To fix this, Digipin gives a precise digital address for any location. Let’s learn more about it.
What Is Digipin?
Digipin stands for Digital Postal Index Number. It is an open-source, geo-coded digital address system created by the Department of Posts with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC.
Digipin converts your address into a unique digital identity for better accuracy.
How Is Digipin Different from Traditional PIN Code?
Traditional PIN codes cover large areas, so they don’t pinpoint exact locations.
Digipin, however, assigns a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code to each location, representing an area about 4 meters by 4 meters. This precise coding helps with navigation, deliveries, and emergency services.
How to Find Your Digipin?
The Postal Department has launched two platforms called ‘Know Your Digipin’ and ‘Know Your Pincode’. Using these, you can get your Digipin based on your exact location.
Simply enter the latitude and longitude of your place, and you will receive the corresponding Digipin code.
Benefits of Digipin
Accuracy: Each location gets a unique code, making it easy to find exact places.
Convenience: Sharing your address becomes easier, improving delivery services.
Digital India: Digipin is a big step forward for India’s digital transformation.
This initiative aims to simplify addressing for smooth delivery of public and private services and to enable ‘Address-as-a-Service’ (AaaS) across India.
It’s especially helpful in areas where postal addresses are unclear or often change.
