IRCTC Tatkal Ticket Booking Timing: Lately, several posts have gone viral on social media claiming that the Indian Railways has changed the timing for Tatkal ticket bookings.
Given that millions of passengers travel daily by train, even a small change in ticket booking timing can affect a large number of people. So, is there really any change?
Has the Tatkal timing changed?
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has clarified the confusion.
According to IRCTC, no changes have been made to the current Tatkal or Premium Tatkal booking times.
The social media claims are false. The existing Tatkal booking schedule remains the same.
When does Tatkal booking open?
Tatkal ticket booking opens one day before the train’s departure. Passengers can book these tickets through the IRCTC website, mobile apps, or at railway ticket counters.
Since Tatkal tickets are limited, they are usually sold out quickly. Importantly, the booking time is different for AC and non-AC classes.
Tatkal Booking Timings for AC and Sleeper Classes:
As per IRCTC:
AC Coaches (2A, 3A, CC, EC, 3E): Booking opens at 10:00 AM, one day before the journey.
Non-AC Coaches (Sleeper, Second Sitting): Booking starts at 11:00 AM, a day before the train’s departure.
Tickets can be booked through the IRCTC website, its official app, third-party apps, or directly at the railway ticket window.
Rules for Tatkal Ticket Booking
Indian Railways has specific rules for Tatkal bookings:
Once a Tatkal ticket is confirmed, no refund is provided if the ticket is cancelled.
A maximum of four passengers can be booked under one Tatkal PNR.
Tatkal fares are higher than regular tickets due to dynamic pricing.
First Class AC tickets are not available under the Tatkal scheme.
Tips to Increase Chances of Getting a Tatkal Ticket
Since Tatkal tickets sell out fast, a few smart steps can help increase your chances of getting a confirmed ticket:
Use the “Master List” and “Travel List” features on the IRCTC website or app. Save passenger details in advance so that you can auto-fill information quickly while booking.
Login at least 5 minutes before the Tatkal booking time begins.
Keep payment details ready (card or UPI), and keep your phone nearby for receiving OTPs to avoid delays.
Every second counts, so minimizing time spent on data entry and payment increases your chance of securing a ticket.
