FASTag: The government is making a major change in the way tolls are collected on highways. A new system is set to replace FASTag.
Starting May 1, 2025, a GPS-based toll collection system will be launched across the country. This new system will replace the current FASTag setup.
With this, you won’t need to stop at toll plazas anymore. Toll will be automatically deducted from your account based on the distance you travel on the highway.
FASTag so far
FASTag was launched in 2016. It uses a tag placed on the vehicle’s windshield, which gets scanned at toll plazas.
The toll is then automatically deducted, helping reduce long lines. But despite this, traffic jams still happened in many places.
Sometimes the tag wouldn’t scan properly, and in some cases, it was misused.
What’s changing – Toll will now be deducted through GPS
In the new system, an on-board unit (OBU) will be fitted in your vehicle. This device uses GPS to track how much distance you travel on the highway.
Based on that, toll charges will be calculated and directly deducted from your bank account or wallet. You won’t have to stop or wait in line anywhere.
Benefits of the new system
Pay as you drive: You’ll only be charged for the actual distance you travel, not the full route.
No queues: Toll plazas won’t be needed, so traffic jams will reduce.
Fewer mistakes: The system is fully automatic, so errors and fraud will be less likely.
Less pollution: Since vehicles won’t need to stop, fuel will be saved and pollution will go down.
When and how it will start
The system will first be used in heavy vehicles like trucks and buses. Later, it will be introduced for all private cars and vehicles.
The government will begin installing OBUs in vehicles as part of this rollout.
Data safety and privacy
Some people may worry about their GPS data being shared outside the country. But the government says the system will use India’s own satellite, NavIC, so all the data will stay within India and remain secure.
Start getting ready
Vehicle owners should start preparing by learning about the new system and installing the OBU on time to avoid problems later.
The government will offer help and information online and at service centers. In short, traveling will now become easier, cheaper, and faster.
