New Opportunity for Remote Workers in New Zealand

If you’ve ever wanted to go to New Zealand and work remotely, now’s your chance.

The country has relaxed its visa rules, offering foreign workers the opportunity to live and work remotely without having to pay taxes.

This move comes after New Zealand’s economy took a hit during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the government is now focusing on tourism as a way to recover.

Key Changes in the Visa Rules

The new visa rules will allow foreign workers to travel to New Zealand and work remotely for companies based in their home countries.

During a press conference at Wellington Airport, Economic Development Minister Nicola Willis explained that the government aims to attract highly skilled workers, particularly from the IT sector, with a focus on South East Asia and America.

This initiative is part of New Zealand’s broader strategy to boost tourism and strengthen the economy.

According to Willis, “The government believes that the new visa rules will make New Zealand a welcoming place for talented people from around the world.”

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also announced the ‘Invest New Zealand’ initiative to promote foreign investment and accelerate economic growth.

However, there are some limitations. If a worker stays in New Zealand for more than 90 days, they may be required to pay tax.

Additionally, workers are allowed to work remotely only for companies based in their home country, not for New Zealand-based companies.

This makes New Zealand the latest country, alongside Spain and Thailand, to offer a visa for remote workers, often referred to as the “Digital Nomad” visa.
