Union Cabinet approves 8th Pay Commission for Govt Employees

Big news for 1 crore central employees and pensioners! Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced that Prime Minister Modi has approved the 8th Central Pay Commission.

This commission will decide the new salaries and pensions for central government employees and pensioners.

The introduction of the 8th Pay Commission means salary increases for all central employees and pension hikes for pensioners.

Employees, pensioners, and trade unions have eagerly awaited this announcement. Key details are expected to be revealed in the upcoming Union Budget.

When Will the 8th Pay Commission Be Implemented?

The Union Cabinet has approved the 8th Pay Commission, as confirmed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, just ahead of the 2025 Budget announcements.

However, the exact date for its establishment is not set yet. Currently, the 7th Pay Commission’s recommendations are in effect, which began in January 2016 and will continue until December 2025.

Previous commissions, including the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth, had 10-year terms, so it is expected the 8th Pay Commission will be implemented in 2026.

When Will the Commission Be Formed?

Vaishnav stated that a chairman and two members will be appointed soon to implement the 8th Pay Commission.

This commission’s goal will be to review and set new salary and pension structures for central government employees and pensioners.

The expected increase in salaries and pensions will take effect in 2026. This decision was made in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in anticipation of the 7th Pay Commission’s conclusion in 2026.

Employee Reactions

Government employees and trade unions are excited by this announcement, as they have been waiting for this decision for a long time.

The 8th Pay Commission, which could be implemented as early as next year, has finally been approved.

Salary Hikes for Defense Employees

About 50 lakh central government employees, including defense personnel, will benefit from the 8th Pay Commission.

Additionally, around 65 lakh pensioners, including defense pensioners, will see improvements.

Delhi government employees, including defense personnel, will also benefit, as their salaries are generally adjusted in line with the Central Pay Commission.

The 7th Pay Commission led to an extra expenditure of Rs 1 lakh crore in the financial year 2016-17.
