UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transactions have become a common and convenient way to make payments within seconds.
However, if you use UPI services, an important update is coming soon.
Starting April 1, 2025, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will introduce new rules to enhance security and prevent errors.
Banks Will Remove Unused Mobile Numbers
To improve security and prevent incorrect payments, NPCI has directed banks to delete mobile numbers that are no longer in use or have been reassigned to someone else.
From April 1, 2025, such inactive or reassigned numbers will be removed from the UPI system.
Regular System Updates to Prevent Errors
To minimize transaction failures, banks and UPI service providers must regularly update their systems. This decision was made during an NPCI meeting on July 16, 2024.
As per the new rules, banks and UPI providers will update their list of mobile numbers every week to prevent unsuccessful or incorrect transactions.
User Consent Required for Updates
Users must give their consent through the UPI app for their mobile numbers to be updated.
If they do not provide permission, their number will not be updated, and they will be unable to make UPI transactions using that number.
Monthly Reports to NPCI
Starting April 1, 2025, banks and UPI apps must submit a monthly report to NPCI. This report will include details about:
1) The number of UPI IDs linked to mobile numbers
2) The number of active users
3) The number of UPI-based transactions
UPI Transactions Will Be More Secure
These new measures aim to enhance the security of UPI transactions. To continue using UPI services smoothly, users should ensure they update their UPI apps regularly and provide necessary permissions when required.
