New Visa Categories for Foreign Students in India

The Indian government has made it easier for foreign students to pursue higher education in the country by introducing two new visa categories: the ‘e-student visa’ and the ‘e-student-X visa.’

These visas are part of an initiative launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs. To apply for these visas, students must visit the government’s ‘Study in India’ (SII) portal.

Understanding the SII Portal

The ‘e-Student Visa’ is for foreign students who are enrolling for studies in India, while the ‘e-Student-X Visa’ is for their dependents.

The SII portal is a platform designed by the Ministry of Education for international students seeking higher education in India.

It partners with over 600 institutions across the country, offering more than 8,000 courses in subjects like engineering, management, technology, science, agriculture, arts, humanities, law, language studies, paramedical science, and yoga.

How to Apply for the Visa

To apply for an e-visa, students must visit the official portal https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/. However, the verification of the application will be done through the SII ID.

Therefore, it is essential to register on the SII portal. After providing details such as name, country, date of birth, mobile number, and email ID, students will receive their SII ID.

The student visa will be issued based on the duration of the course and can be extended if necessary during their stay in India.

Eligibility for the Student Visa

Foreign students who have received an admission offer from any institution listed on the SII portal are eligible to apply for the e-visa.

This visa is available to students wishing to pursue post-graduation, Ph.D., or other full-time regular courses from recognized institutions in India.
