TRAI Brings Back Voice and SMS Plans for Users

Indian telecom users often have to pay for data-inclusive plans, even if they don’t need mobile data, leading to unnecessary expenses.

To address this issue, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has mandated telecom operators to introduce recharge plans that focus solely on voice calling and SMS benefits, without the inclusion of internet data.

This decision is aimed at benefiting users who rely primarily on calling and messaging services and find data-inclusive plans unnecessarily expensive.

Major telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL are now preparing to launch Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) that cater exclusively to voice and SMS needs.

Voice and SMS Plans Make a Comeback

Previously, telecom companies had phased out voice and SMS-only plans to boost profits, leaving users with no choice but to opt for more expensive data-inclusive plans.

This practice led to higher costs for users who didn’t require mobile data.

Taking note of the situation, TRAI intervened, urging operators to reintroduce these simpler plans to meet customer needs.

TRAI also released a consultation paper to gather feedback on reviving voice and SMS-only plans, ensuring that customers are not forced to pay for unwanted services.

Currently, most tariff plans in the market combine voice, data, SMS, and even OTT services, which do not cater to users who only want basic calling and messaging benefits.

Extended Validity for Voice and SMS Plans

In another customer-friendly move, TRAI has increased the maximum validity period of special recharge coupons from 90 days to 365 days.

This change will allow telecom companies to offer long-term plans that provide only voice and SMS services, offering more convenience and cost-effectiveness to users who do not require mobile data.
