Uber has introduced several new safety features to make its rides safer, with a particular focus on the safety of women passengers and drivers.
The company has partnered with a Bengaluru-based NGO, Durga, to help strengthen its commitment to safety.
Some of the key new features include audio recording, a female rider preference option, and other safety measures like RideCheck and Share My Trip.
Key Safety Features for a Secure Ride
Uber’s new safety features aim to provide better security for both passengers and drivers. For example, the audio recording feature will automatically activate during every ride.
This is part of Uber’s efforts to use technology to improve safety and ensure a hassle-free experience for users.
According to the 2024 India Economic Impact Report, 95% of female riders choose Uber for its safety, and 84% believe it is the safest way to get home.
Uber also allows passengers and drivers to share their live location and ride details directly with the police in case of an emergency.
This feature is already live in Telangana, and tests have been completed in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
Women Rider Preference and Audio Recording for Safety
To further enhance security, Uber now offers a female rider preference option.
Women drivers can choose to accept only female riders, which can be particularly helpful during late-night rides.
This feature, introduced based on driver feedback, has already been used for over 21,000 trips and helps women feel safer while driving, allowing them to earn more in the process.
Additionally, Uber riders can now use the audio recording feature if they feel uncomfortable or anxious during a trip.
The recordings will not be used by Uber unless the rider decides to submit them as part of a safety report.
This feature is available nationwide for both riders and drivers, in compliance with India’s one-party consent law.
Promoting Gender Equality and Respectful Rides
Uber has also partnered with the Durga NGO to promote gender equality and safety. This partnership will offer virtual sessions for drivers to better understand
and address the safety concerns of female riders. By doing so, Uber aims to create a safer, more respectful experience for all users.
