Germany has been facing an economic crisis due to a shortage of workers for some time.
To address this issue, the German government relaxed immigration rules last year to improve its labor market. Despite these efforts, the country is still experiencing a shortage of workers.
As a result, the government has decided to increase the total number of labor visas in 2024. This increase is expected to be 10% higher compared to the previous year.
This decision is good news for people in India, as they can benefit from the increased opportunities.
New Visa System and Government Statement
The German government introduced a new point-based system last year, similar to Canada’s, called the “Opportunity Card.”
This system makes it easier for professionals and university graduates to enter Germany, study, and find jobs.
It also allows skilled workers from non-EU countries to come to Germany even if their qualifications are not recognized.
In a joint statement, three German ministries confirmed that by the end of this year, around 200,000 professional visas will be issued, reflecting a 10% increase compared to 2023.
There has also been a 20% rise in student visas for people from non-EU countries.
Ministers’ Statements
German Home Minister Nancy Faser highlighted that the Opportunity Card will help talented youth more easily complete their studies and training in Germany.
She emphasized that skilled workers can now find jobs more easily.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock praised these reforms, noting that they will help Germany meet its labor shortage.
