Canada Tightens Rules for Indian Students’ Work Permits

It is becoming harder for Indian students to study and find work in Canada.

The Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has introduced new rules for the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which will come into effect on November 1, 2024.

These changes include new criteria for obtaining a work permit after studying.

The Canadian government aims to address labor shortages in specific industries through these new regulations.

Additionally, the government wants international students to have knowledge of both English and French.

Students graduating in Canada who wish to work there will now face stricter conditions for obtaining a work permit, making it more challenging, particularly for Indian students.

Language Test Requirement for Work Permits

One of the key changes is the introduction of a language proficiency test.

Students who want to work after completing their graduation must prove their proficiency in either English or French.

To meet this requirement, students must pass one of the following tests: CELPIP, IELTS, or PTE for English,

and TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French. Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral students will need to achieve Canadian Language Benchmark Level-7 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Changes in Work Permit Application Process

The process for applying for a post-study work permit has also changed. International students now have 180 days to apply for a work permit after completing their studies.

However, if a student wants to work before obtaining the PGWP, they must get a valid permit.

During the application process, students will need to provide their degree, diploma, official transcript, or a letter of completion from their educational institution.

According to the new rules, graduates can no longer apply for a post-graduation work permit at the port of entry.

Applications must now be submitted online, either from within Canada or from abroad.

Additionally, students wishing to work in sectors that require medical tests must undergo a medical exam 90 days before applying for a work permit.
