New Delhi:
Apple, a global tech giant, is expanding its manufacturing operations in India, which is expected to generate 6 lakh jobs by the end of this financial year, according to a report by The Economic Times.
This move comes as Apple aims to reduce its dependence on China, and it will significantly benefit the Indian workforce, especially women.
Job Creation Details
Apple and its suppliers have reported that by March next year, they expect to create 2 lakh direct jobs in India, with about 70% of these positions reserved for women.
The report highlights that Apple has partnered with three companies in India—Foxconn, Wistron (now Tata Electronics), and Pegatron.
Together, these companies have already created 80,872 direct jobs.
Additionally, major suppliers such as Tata Group, Salcomp, Madrasan, Foxlink (in Tamil Nadu), Sunwoda (in Uttar Pradesh), ATL (in Haryana), and Jabil (in Maharashtra) have generated around 84,000 direct jobs.
Impact of Apple’s Growth in India
Since the introduction of the smartphone Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in 2020, Apple vendors and suppliers have created 1.65 lakh direct jobs in India.
The government estimates that each direct job in the electronics industry results in three additional indirect jobs.
Therefore, the Apple ecosystem could potentially create 5 to 6 lakh jobs in India by the end of March, making Apple a major employer in the country with a strong focus on including women and newcomers in its workforce.
